About Everest Base Camp

There are two base camps on opposite sides of Mt. Everest: to the South in Nepal, and to the North in Tibet. Located at the altitude of 5,360 metres (17,600 ft) is South Base Camp in Nepal. (28°0′26″N 86°51′34″E / 28.00722°N 86.85944°E / 28.00722; 86.85944), and at 5,208 metres (17,090 ft) is the North Base Camp in Tibet(28°8′28″N 86°51′6″E / 28.14111°N 86.85167°E / 28.14111; 86.85167 (North Base Camp)). These camps are rudimentary campsites on Mount Everest that are used by mountain climbers during their ascent and descent. South Base Camp is used when climbing via the southeast ridge, while North Base Camp is used when climbing via the northeast ridge.
Supplies are carried to the camps by sherpas or porters, and with help of animals. The North Base Camp has vehicle access (at least in the summer months). Climbers typically rest at base camp for several days for acclimatization; to reduce the risks and severity of altitude sickness. Base camps usually consist of long lines of tents with food, blankets, and light.

North
As of 2002, a visit to the North (Tibet-side) Base Camp required a permit from the Chinese government, above and beyond the permit required to visit Tibet itself. At this time such permits could be arranged relatively easily via travel companies in Lhasa, typically as part of a travel package that included hiring a vehicle, driver, and translator. Road access to the North Base Camp may be obtained from a road branching to the South from the

South
The trek to Everest Base Camp on the Nepal side is one of the most popular trekking routes in the Himalayas and is done by thousands of trekkers each year.

Whitewater Rafting in Himalayas

Himalayas, the land of such diverse adventure sports is also the favorite destination for river rafting, otherwise known as 'white water rafting'. The rivers in the upper Himalayas are the best in the world for river rafting sports. The Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers have many gradients of rapids, suited to both, the amateur and the professional. Just like India Nepal also has a wide range of river rafting regions. Some of the major rafting sites of India are Rishikesh, Kaudiyala, Ladakh, Asan Barrage, and Devprayag. Among the rivers there is Teesta, Beas, Zanskar and Brahmaputra. River rafting in Jammu and Kashmir gives you varied options like the Indus River and its major tributaries.

The best stretch for professionally guided runs in whitewater is on the Indus between Spituk and Saspol. Beyond Saspol, rafting becomes so it requires very skilled people. It is said that Zanskar River is the most difficult river for rafting. The course of the river is through the gorge in the Zanskar Mountains, between Padum and Nimo regions. Ganga is suited to both the amateur and the professional. Ganga near Rishikesh in Uttaranchal is a popular spot for white water river rafting. Nepal also has some excellent opportunities for rafting, as there are numerous rivers, which offers river rafting. River rafting can be great fun for adventure lovers. Normally if you are fit and healthy and not afraid of water then rafting can be your type of sport. To become a skilled rafter you just need a few hours of rigorous training. And training can be available at many tourist agencies and state departments.

Tips for River Rafting
  • You should carry your small items in boxes so that it not replaced.
  • You should carry a first aid box with you and necessary medications such as bee-sting kits, insulin, inhalers, etc.
  • Avoid carrying small items like cell phones, wallets and car keys.
  • You should also carry sunglasses with strap so that it doesn't fall and to protect your eyes from ultra violet rays and sunscreen to protect your skin. Disposable waterproof cameras are easily available, easy to take along with you and take good quality pictures.
  • Rafting clothes you should carry during summer are nylon shorts, simple swimsuit, sport shoes or sandals, and a hat. During spring and autumn you require some additional clothing. Don't wear cotton cloths while rafting, except in summers as cotton takes away the warmth from your body. Materials like wool, polyester, nylon and other synthetic materials will keep you warmer and will dry faster than cotton.

Himalayas

The great Himalayas, the highest mountain range in the world, extend along the northern frontiers of Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, and Burma. They were formed geologically as a result of the collision of the Indian subcontinent with Asia.

This process of plate tectonics is ongoing, and the gradual northward drift of the Indian subcontinent still causes earthquakes (see Earthquakes, this ch.). Lesser ranges jut southward from the main body of the Himalayas at both the eastern and western ends.

The Himalayan system, about 2,400 kilometers in length and varying in width from 240 to 330 kilometers, is made up of three parallel ranges--the Greater Himalayas, the Lesser Himalayas, and the Outer Himalayas--sometimes collectively called the Great Himalayan Range.

The Greater Himalayas, or northern range, average approximately 6,000 meters in height and contain the three highest mountains on earth: Mount Everest (8,796 meters) on the China-Nepal border; K2 (8,611 meters, also known as Mount Godwin-Austen, and in China as Qogir Feng) in an area claimed by India, Pakistan, and China; and Kanchenjunga (8,598 meters) on the India-Nepal border. Many major mountains are located entirely within India, such as Nanda Devi (7,817 meters) in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

The snow line averages 4,500 to 6,000 meters on the southern side of the Greater Himalayas and 5,500 to 6,000 on the northern side.

Because of climatic conditions, the snow line in the eastern Himalayas averages 4,300 meters, while in the western Himalayas it averages 5,800 meters.

The Lesser Himalayas, located in northwestern India in the states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, in north-central India in the state of Sikkim, and in northeastern India in the state of Arunachal Pradesh, range from 1,500 to 5,000 meters in height. Located in the Lesser Himalayas are the hill stations of Shimla (Simla) and Darjiling (Darjeeling). During the colonial period, these and other hill stations were used by the British as summer retreats to escape the intense heat of the plains. It is in this transitional vegetation zone that the contrasts between the bare southern slopes and the forested northern slopes become most noticeable.

The Outer or Southern Himalayas, averaging 900 to 1,200 meters in elevation, lie between the Lesser Himalayas and the Indo-Gangetic Plain. In Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, this southernmost range is often referred to as the Siwalik Hills. It is possible to identify a fourth, and northernmost range, known as the Trans-Himalaya.

This range is located entirely on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, north of the great west-to-east trending valley of the Yarlung Zangbo River. Although the Trans-Himalaya Range is divided from the Great Himalayan Range for most of its length, it merges with the Great Himalayan Range in the western section--the Karakoram Range--where India, Pakistan, and China meet. The southern slopes of each of the Himalayan ranges are too steep to accumulate snow or support much tree life; the northern slopes generally are forested below the snow line. Between the ranges are extensive high plateaus, deep gorges, and fertile valleys, such as the vales of Kashmir and Kulu. The Himalayas serve a very important purpose.

They provide a physical screen within which the monsoon system operates and are the source of the great river systems that water the alluvial plains below (see Climate, this ch.). As a result of erosion, the rivers coming from the mountains carry vast quantities of silt that enrich the plains.

The area of northeastern India adjacent to Burma and Bangladesh consists of numerous hill tracts, averaging between 1,000 and 2,000 meters in elevation, that are not associated with the eastern part of the Himalayas in Arunachal Pradesh. The Naga Hills, rising to heights of more than 3,000 meters, form the watershed between India and Burma. The Mizo Hills are the southern part of the northeastern ranges in India. The Garo, Khasi, and Jaintia hills are centered in the state of Meghalaya and, isolated from the northeastern ranges, divide the Assam Valley from Bangladesh to the south and west.

How to Stay Fit in the Winter

Winter in New England can be a tough season. With large amounts of snow, cold weather, and holiday eating; it is very easy to stay inside and pack on the pounds. So many people lose their nutrition and training results because they let things slide in the winter. Even though these are valid concerns, do not make them into excuses and reasons for not training and exercising.

Staying active in the winter is important. Many people do not like to exercise inside all the time so the key is variety and fun. If you enjoy running, biking and walking outside in the summer and fall, you may need to find some inside activities to supplement this in the winter. Join a local YMCA and start a swimming training program. Swimming is one of the best full body workouts that you can do. It is low impact, uses all major muscle groups, and develops great cardiovascular fitness. Other great indoor conditioning workouts include jumping rope, bike sprints, and stair sprints.

In terms of strength training, you should be training 2-3 days per week. If you have trouble staying motivated, train with a friend or join a personal training group. My small group personal training clients love the motivation and accountability they receive from training with me and 3 other people at the same time.

Going outside in the winter is not an impossible task either. If you enjoy walking, simply bundle up, grab a friend and enjoy the crisp winter air. This can be very refreshing and you will also burn more calories as your body tries to stay warm. Running outside is do-able, just find some streets that are cleared off, be sure to layer up with dry fit clothing and drink plenty of water.

Winter sports are also a great way to stay fit. Skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing, and snowshoeing are all great exercise options. Hitting the slopes or going out on the trails with friends can be fun and you will burn a lot of calories staying warm and moving up and down the mountains and trails.

Holiday eating can be another big issue when it comes to weight loss and fitness training in the winter. Parties, dinners, and other festive occasions can put a damper on your nutrition plan. Stick to the plan as much as you can. Fill up on fruits, vegetables, lean meats and proteins, whole grains and healthy fats such as avocados and nuts. Have snacks before you leave for a party to avoid overeating. Cut out as much alcohol as possible as this leads to excess calorie intake and overeating. Drink plenty of water and do not skip meals to compensate for a party or dinner that night. Just eat your normal intake during the day and pick and choose what you have at the parties; do not overindulge.

Try these simple tips to staying fit and eating healthy in the winter. Do not fall off track and use excuses simply because it is cold and the holidays are coming up. Have fun with training and exercise, stick to your goals, and you will see results.

Tips On Hair Styling

Providing hair styling tips is a difficult challenge. There are so many different textures, colors, lengths, shapes, and thicknesses of hair that it's almost impossible to make blanket statements about what we all should or should not do with our hair. Ultimately, it comes down to you looking at yourself in the mirror and making decisions about how you want to treat and style your own hair. But, that being said, if you want some points at least to think about as starting points, here are some hair styling tips that I've found useful.

1. Hair goes through phases: When it comes to hair, have you noticed that techniques that work one week often don't work the next week? This is due to lots of things, including the season, the weather, your stress level, your diet and exercise habits, the length of your hair, and how you've treated your hair over the past weeks and months.

This is why it's always a mistake to mindlessly do the same thing over and over again. You have to keep an eye on your hair, monitor its conditions and its changes, and adjust accordingly. That's right: Hair styling methods don't just vary between different people; they also vary between the present you, the past you, and the future you. No wonder these things make us a little crazy sometimes.

2. Find a dirty/clean balance: Hair that looks too clean is bad, and hair that looks too dirty is bad. Are we agreed? If so, then we can also agree that the key to beautiful hair is striking a balance between the two poles.

If your hair is very oily, it's okay to shampoo often. Just lay off the blow-dryer and the heating products that make clean hair look super-clean. Then, after you shampoo your hair, you can "dirty it up" in perfectly natural ways such as rubbing a little bit of lotion through it or sprinkling in some baby powder. Your hair will technically be clean, but it will also be manageable.

3. Style in stages: Resist the urge to try to make your hair look finished when it's still wet, as further drying will always change its shape and texture. After getting out of the shower, leave the brush aside for a little while. Feel free to run your hands through your hair to undo any knots, but don't worry if it looks big and unstyled in the early stages. Then, once it has dried a little, start working it toward its final form, but leave a little bit of messiness. What looks like messiness in the early stages will turn into body later on. Only when your hair feels like it's almost dry should you work it into the style you're going for. This strategy holds for both air drying and blow-drying; blow-drying just speeds up the process.

4. Don't stop cutting: Even if you decide to grow your hair long, it needs regular scissor maintenance to keep it manageable and not too thick and frayed. Instead of trying to grow your hair as quickly as possible, pace yourself. Spread your haircuts out longer than normal, and cut less off-but don't stop cutting. Regular trims will prevent your style from being hidden behind mountains of hair.

Stop Identity Theft By Regular Paper Shredding

The fastest growing global crime is identity theft and thieves are getting sophisticated every day. Millions of people are losing their private information to sneaky, thieving rats that take the information and steal hundreds of millions of dollars every year. In answer to identity theft, we take great pains to protect ourselves with complicated passwords and paper shredders.

Recently, Clark Howard syndicated television and radio host cautioned viewers that private citizens or anyone for that matter, can hire a hacker to hack into a person's email password and gain access to all kinds of private information. Think about it. If you bank or shop online, passwords may be stored in your email. So, in addition to shredding every identifying piece of paper that you throw out, it is necessary to in effect, shred private information stored in your email application.

I don't know about you, but even though I shred as I go, I still accumulate mountains of paper files every day. Even with paperless billing, there's still a collection of papers that seems to proliferate. In some cases, paper accumulation has doubled in size even while I try to recycle at every turn I take.

Many private citizens are joining businesses, government offices and non-profits in hiring professional on-site document paper shredders. If you question turning your private documents and files to a professional paper shredding company, be assured that the company takes several security measures while executing the job. In North Carolina, there are services of commercial paper shredding in Charlotte and paper shredding in Raleigh and Greensborough. Services extend to paper shredding in Washington, D.C. where millions of tons of paper abounds. Picture the mountains of Bills that pass through the halls of congress and throughout the government agency offices on a daily basis.

Even if one takes protective measures to lock information on the computer, information on paper still floats throughout our home office, in the car, in a purse or briefcase. Paper is still a part of our daily life. It is imperative to keep tabs on paper and shred it daily or regularly. It is amazing how lax people leave their information, ready for prying eyes and sticky fingers. If you don't have a desktop shredder or office shredder, consider hiring a company to visit your home or office and shred all documents on site for safety and security. Throw a neighborhood shredding party.

The Roots of Modern Fire Dancing

Anyone who hasn't been living under a rock - or maybe the Antarctic where you might not be able to build a fire - has no doubt watched a fire dancing performance once at his life. It's fascinating because it's dangerous and if you want to know how this life-threatening art came about, read on.

Maori Poi The Maoris are a native tribe from New Zealand and have been largely credited as the original inventors of the art of fire dancing. Traditionally speaking, the dancing sequence they make using poi balls do not involve the use of fire but the moves, however, are similar to what you'd see being used by today's modern fire dancers.

Maori poi balls are both dancing and musical instruments. More specifically, it's used like drums when making music. These dances are used not only for storytelling but they are also good for exercising the body. All those swift, rhythmic, and complex moves develop a person's coordination, strength, and flexibility especially in the arms, hands, and wrists.

Hawaiian Sword Dance Another traditional dance that today's modern fire dancing is based on is the knife dance from the Samoans, a tribe native to Hawaii. Everyone knows that Hawaiians are very good dancers. Their dancing styles are unique and famous all over the world and many songs have been made popular simply because they are often used for Hawaiian dancing.

It was only in 1946, however, that Hawaiian dancing had been combined with the use of fire. Then, Letu Olo Misilagi was at San Francisco's Shriners Convention for a performance. He happened to watch a baton twirler and fire eater perform and was summarily inspired, enough to create a fire knife dance. The rest, as they say, is history. He even has a book out about it, not to mention spawning an annual competition for fire knife dancers from all over the world held at Oahu.

Bulgarian Fire Walking It isn't dancing per se, but it's close enough. Fire walking is still a dangerous and thrilling performing art and one that originated from the mountains of Bulgaria. History specifically points to Saint Constantine, whose feast day is celebrated by the locals by walking on fire. Needless to say, do not attempt to do this without professional training. Tourists haven't been as cautious in the past and they ended up injured.

Today, it's not infrequent that you'll find fire dancers performing all of these and other styles for your entertainment.

Cheapest RAK Business In UAE

Ras Al Khaimah ranks among the smaller emirates of the UAE federation but it has always had an important position: In the past it was a centre of traditional shipbuilding and maritime commerce, more recently as a centre of quarrying, manufacturing and tourism. Since 2003, the government of the emirate has been pursuing the policy of diversification of the economy, industrialization and promotion of tourism, investment into education and public health and by investment into public utilities.

Its gas reserves are more important but revenues from gas are also of a lesser importance than in other emirates and the emirate has had to look beyond its borders to fulfill its demand for gas. As the emirate will never be a major oil producer, RAK has instead had to concentrate on developing its industrial sector. Cement and ceramics remain the dominant industries in RAK and officials aim to make these sections regional and global leaders in terms of production.

The Emirate is rich with the raw materials such as limestone, clay, quartz and other minerals. RAK business is unique in the Gulf region as it has a high concentration of leading industrial units which process these natural resources and manufacture various types of cement, clinker, ceramics and other building materials.

It opened the United Arab Emirates first cement company in the early 1970s and is now the United Arab Emirates largest producer of cement. Rak business also boasts the largest rock quarry in the Gulf region.

The emirate formed RAK Ceramics in 1980s, which has become the largest ceramics producer, and Julphar, the Gulf regions first pharmaceuticals company. Since the 1980, other advanced manufacturing companies have set up operations in RAK business, including companies producing glass, CD and DVD discs, air-conditioning equipment, machinery parts, metal products and others.

More traditional industries, such as fishing and agriculture, continue to play an important role in Ras al Khaimah economy. In 1955, the first agricultural research centre in the UAE was established there, and since then, innovative methods of arid zone cultivation have made the emirate one of the leading agricultural producers in the UAE.

Ras AL Khaimah is well known for its dairy and poultry products, eggs, fodder and animal meat. In addition to this, the fertile plains in the south-east produce fruits and vegetables for the local UAE market.

Tourism is becoming one of the major industries in the emirate with several large tourism projects at various stages of completion. Natural topographical features of Ras Al Khaimah include about 65 kilometres of sandy beaches, mountains which reach almost up to 2,000 metres, gravel plains and sand dunes.

Ras al khaimah founded ras al khaimah free trade zone Authority in 2000 under the patronage of H.H sheikh faisal Bin Saqr Al Qassimi,Chairman and Oussama El omari, chief Executive Officer. The free zone provides cutting edge technology and keen customer focus and it offers on demand & custom built support services to investors a range of unique services which include the legal, human resources and marketing assistance.

Rak FTZ has created a system of four parks-Businesses Park, Industrial park, Technology Park and Al Ghayl Industrial park-that offer identical advantages and benefits to investors. The three park concept includes the Business Park, industrial park and technology park, offering offices, equipped warehouses and land facilities situated in different locations across the emirate of Ras al khaimah, each park caters to the specific business interests and activities of the Rak FTZ investors.

Ras Al Khaimah Free Trade Zone offers numerous incentives to its companies: * 100% foreign ownership 100% income and corporate tax exemption * 100% Capital & Profit repatriation * Long term renewable lease * Strategic location with access to over 1.2 billion consumers

* Transparent laws and regulations

* Promotion centers in Dubai and Abu Dhabi * Simple and fast application procedures * State of the art communication facilities * Excellent Sea port and International Air port facilities * Easy international Access

* Abundant energy supply

As the youngest of all of the Free Zones in the UAE, Ras Al Khaimah Free Trade Zone has built its international reputation and infrastructure only after careful research, planning and development, resulting in the introduction of a unique, ambitious 3 Park concept that did not exist previously in the UAE or even within the region, and the provision of premier business facilities for RAK Free Trade Zone investors within other Emirates.

Spectacular Summer Beach Holiday Spots

Of course a summer break could include all kinds of other locations, such as a visit to famous city, some high altitude walking in the mountains or time spent in one of the famous Lakeland areas of the world such as the Italian Lakes like Garda or Como, the Canadian great lakes or the Swedish Fjords. But more often than not there is likely to be some type of beach involved in most people's summer vacation. The Spanish Canary Islands are a small group of islands that have their own variety of beaches that provide holidaymakers with plenty of choice, whatever their preferences.

So what is it about a beach that attracts so many people? After all warm sunny weather can be experience in most locations, and swimming opportunities are found in many inland areas, either in lakes or rivers. Beaches have several unique characteristics that perhaps contribute to their allure. First there is the sand itself. The soft sand is comfortable to lie on, feels nice to walk on and of course provides a great play environment for small children. But sandy beaches are not the only popular ones, with shingle and rocky beaches also proving attractive. The views offered by coastal locations are also a factor. There is something pleasing about an outlook where the land has ended and the sea stretches off into infinity. Imaginations run riot about what may be over the horizon, and the hustle and bustle of the world inland can be left behind. Of the course the sea itself plays a part. Unlike lakes, the sea is altogether a more dramatic and powerful beast. Gentle swells or crashing waves make the sea and ever changing environment and one that can either be just looked at or made use of as part of other pastimes. Fishing, swimming, surfing, sailing, diving, kayaking and windsurfing are just some of the sports and hobbies that make use of the sea. One other aspect is of course wildlife. Either in the water, above it or along its shores the sea supports a myriad of life forms that vary across the world. Beaches can be a naturists heaven at all times of the year.

For those seeking a place to lie in the sun there are beaches all over the world that easily fulfil that requirements. From the beaches of the Spanish Costa Blanca to Australia's Gold Coast, long sandy beaches are everywhere it seems. For the ultimate in sandy beach tranquillity one of the 1000's of Maldives islands may be the ideal. Tiny islands, some with room for just one dwelling and surrounded entirely by white soft sand, these are perhaps the sand lovers dream. On the island of Fuerteventura are perhaps some of the Canaries' best sandy beaches. In the north of the island is the biggest beach, stretching for several kilometres south from Corralejo. The waters here, looking across to the nature reserve on the Isla of Lobos, can be a turquoise blue and soft sand reaches inland across dunes for over 2 kilometers. They present almost a desert scene looking inland towards the hills of extinct volcanoes like Volcan de la Olive.

Sports also have their favourite beach locations. From the surfing beaches of Hawaii like the North Shore, Oahu, the home of surfing, where huge waves provide the ultimate thrills for surfers during the winter. Waimea Beach is another spot where massive waves frighten the life out of all but the bravest surfers. In the Canaries surfing is also a popular beach activity, although the waves don't compare with the size of those in Hawaii. It is however one of Europe's favourite surf locations with Sotavento in the south of Fuerteventura and Playa de Famara on Tenerife both popular places.

As far as landscape and scenery are concern there are many spectacular beaches around the world, some of which are hardly visited due to their remoteness. Africa has some amazing places, like the beaches of the Tanzanian island of Zanzibar. Paje beach on the east coast is a seeming endless stretch of white sand, fringed by palm trees, with an outlook across the Indian Ocean. In the UK there may not be the vast expanses of beach areas enjoyed by some larger countries but there are some equally spectacular spots. Kynance Cove in Cornwall is one example of a small dramatic beach reached by a steep footpath and Three Cliffs beach on the Gower Peninsula in Wales is regarded by some as one of the most beautiful beaches in the UK.

On the North West coast of Gran Canaria, beaches are few and far between as steep jagged cliff sides plunge into the Atlantic Ocean, but these places have their own beauty too. Driving north along the coast road towards the town of Agaete, the traveler is presented with some breathtaking views.

Finally let's not forget the children, those for whom the beach presents the perfect play ground. Praia de Rocha close to the town of Portimao on the Portuguese Algarve is a favourite family holiday spot. Along Spain's Coast del Sol are many golden sandy best favoured by European tourists. Two such examples are at Villajoyosa where the El Paradis beach has almost a mile of golden sand to enjoy and further south near Alicante the Playa Muchavista and the Playa de San Juan form a sweeping arc of almost 4 miles of wonderful sandy beach.

In the Canaries the south of Gran Canaria has perhaps some of the best children's beaches. The vast sand dunes of Maspalomas and the long sandy beach of Playa del Ingles are both ideal places for children to play the days away in the sun, sand and surf.

These are just a few examples of the best beaches around the world and an illustration of how resorts like Fuerteventura, Tenerife and Gran Canaria can offer equally spectacular alternatives in a single location.

Queenstown New Zealand

Queenstown New Zealand is located on the South Island, and is best known as the adventure capital of New Zealand. If you want to jump off a bridge, hurtle through narrow gorges in a jetboat, raft the rapids on wild rivers, or pursue any number of extreme adventures, then Queenstown is the ideal place to start.

But it also has much more to offer. Lets start with the scenery. As I write this article I'm sitting in our holiday apartment in Queenstown, looking out over Lake Wakatipu, with the 7,000 foot high Remarkables in the background. This really is an amazing place. These peaks are covered in snow for a good portion of the year, and Queenstown is a ski resort of international acclaim. The sheer size of the lakes and mountains is best viewed from one of the many vantage points in town such as Deer Park Heights or better still, at the top of the gondola, which provides a leisurely, if thrilling ascent to the viewing deck and restaurant. Once here you will marvel at the vista, which can only be described as breathtaking.

If heights are not your thing, then take a leisurely car drive to either Glenorchy or Kingston, along the shores of Lake Wakatipu. Every corner reveals another spectacular photo opportunity, so keep your camera handy.

And if you like fine food, Queenstown has a "smorgasboard" of over 100 restaurants and bars from which to choose. And there are numerous local vineyards for wine lovers.

If you are planning a New Zealand holiday, then Queenstown is a must see.

As well as the indigenous fynbos that occurs all over the Western Cape and some parts of the Eastern Cape, South Africa boasts many other species of flowers, including the very attractive fresh cut flowers available on the flower market.

There are many different species that bloom at different times of the year, and in the South Western Cape, there are flowers blooming perennially. In Namaqualand, a dry and rocky stretch of land on the West Coast of South Africa, the spring brings many daisies and other flowers collectively known as the Namaqualand Daisies. The spring daisies are a popular tourist attraction, as the area becomes carpeted with the yellow and red flowers.

The Karoo, too, has floral attractions, despite having an arid desert climate. During winter, flowering aloes are a beautiful sight to behold in the area. The Drakensberg Mountains and the escarpment in Limpopo and Mpumalangha feature a spectacular assortment of flowering plants.

Ericas are the largest family of flowering plants in South Africa. These flowers bloom in a variety of colours at different times of the year, especially in the Cape region. The area also has some 550 species of orchid flowers and arum lilies. White lilies indigenous to South Africa are from the Cape region and pink and yellow lilies are found throughout the rest of the country.

How The Dog Bite

In the many years I've worked with dogs, I really lost count on how many times I got bit. With a couple exceptions, it was not a purposeful bite; my most recent bite was received after I'd gone to bed for a much needed night's sleep. Yes, that's right, sleeping in my own bed I got bit - and bit hard.

We have 6 German Shepherds living with us in our pack and like any pack inside that pack there are little battles and games that take place. In what I call "Top Dog," for instance, there is a race to see which dog can make it to the top of the stairs first. Oh, no matter who makes it - they let the other dogs come up too but there is like this ring-kissing ceremony. The others absolutely hate having to acknowledge the top dog for that stair session. It's actually quite funny.

We are a pack/family with my husband as the alpha male and myself as the alpha female. Like a lot of families, though, we have a member who can be dysfunctional. In our case, it's my husbands East German female Jasmine. Jasmine is from one of my lines and absolutely one of the smartest dogs I have ever met. She plays with three toys at a time and uses a stick and a ball to play off a wall, actually anticipating the angles. Jasmine can keep a game of "stick ball" going for a half hour at a time.

Unfortunately Jasmine has decided that our other East German shepherd Whitney should just die. We don't know why unless it's that Whitney does not have one mean bone in her body. She never growls at the other dogs, shares gladly and when I still had a working kennel she was the nurse dog. If a puppy needed to by "hyped up" for play, it went in with Whitney; low self confidence, Whitney would fix that in a very short period. And if a pup was hurt, Whitney always took care of them as if they were her own.

When Jasmine came to live with us, I was just excited because she came from my lines and I could literally see all the hours of work we'd done with her mother and grandmother pay off because, you see, Whitney is Jasmine's grandmother. Jasmine's wolf instincts are so right on with her protection, loyalty and her ability to reason. All my dogs learn to full mouth bite as pups and Jasmine had obviously been taught this by her mum.

Over a period of time we discovered Jasmine just thinks the world would be a better place without Whitney in it. Our first clue was in June of 2008 when, in the middle of the night, she attacked Whitney IN HER SLEEP and we woke to breaking up a dog fight. You don't want a dog fight when you have 6 German Shepherds because that can easily turn into a pack. I'd like to do a related article on a dog pack as well as I have witnessed and been involved in breaking up four of them and that is a real nightmare. It's also a good lesson to any kennel owner to fully understand how much you must be able to rely on and depend on the people you hire to work in your kennel. Mistakes made by these people can turn deadly.

For now, however, I'll address my newest bite from which I am still recovering. It all started when Whitney lost her footing and fell about 10 feet in the air landing flat on her back. It was horrible and, of course scared her half to death and we had to watch her carefully. I called the veterinarian who told us what to watch for and it became obvious she had a lot of swelling and most likely bruising because as the day wore on, she would whimper. She seemed to have a great deal of trouble just laying down or finding a comfortable position.

That night my husband lifted her and put her on the bed as we were watching her for serious injuries (such as broken bones and internal bleeding). Jasmine, because of her feelings toward Whitney, is stationed all the time in the house now and that night was no exception. The only trouble is, we didn't realize that she could still get on the bed from where she was tied.

Some time in the middle of the night Jasmine woke my husband by sliding her water bowl around and complaining because he'd forgotten to fill the bowl before we went to bed. Keep in mind I was sound asleep, as was Whitney. My husband got up and proceeded to get Jasmine water and Jasmine proceeded to jump on the bed and grab Whitney by the neck, waking poor Whitney, already in full-body pain and she began to scream. That's how I woke up - my husband hitting the light and a full fledged dog attack right on top of me. Luckily my other four dogs were as startled and confused as we were.

My husband grabbed Jasmine and she would not let go of her grandmother. I think most people who deal with working dogs have seen such a dog in its most dog aggressive state and in that state, the personality of that dog is no longer the animal you know. It is much more like a wild animal - a wolf. He had a terrible time getting Jasmine to let go and I grabbed Whitney to hold on to her so that Jasmine's hold wouldn't tug her right off the bed and into a further fray.

The second my husband got Jasmine off Whitney's neck; Whitney was finally able to do something to protect herself. She did. She bit full-mouthed and hard three times. Unfortunately, Jasmine was no longer there; I was. In her shock and disorientation she still realized at the third bite that she had my hand and in full shame she stopped. I had kept quiet and not jerked my hand so I could prevent further damage and once freed I jumped from the bed and ran to the bathroom to turn the water onto the bloody hand.

My husband, in the mean time had taken Jasmine out to the garage and come back in and saw a blood trail on the ground which belonged to me. I have to tell you that I've received some painful bites before but the most painful are the ones in the hand. I knew this already from the little finger on my left hand and my left ring finger. All the nerves are close to the top; there are tons of little bones and when any part of your hand swells, it makes everything you do difficult. Fifty percent of every dog bite will get infected. I had 12 wounds - 6 on top, 6 on the bottom. That meant that each one of them had a 50 percent chance of getting infected; it does not mean that all of them together have a 50 percent chance so I began taking a strong antibiotic right away. I was lucky because with a fairly recent major surgery I'd had, the doctor had prescribed them "just in case" I got a lung infection.

That is the story of the night I got the bite. The cost of the bite has been severe but it could have been worse. I lost 2 (maybe 3) writing jobs because I could not write. Never mind the pain was so intense it was hard to think and the infection I got and the strong antibiotic made me very ill. Plus I had a sick dog to take care of - it just seemed as if this one incident was impacting everything in my life and there was nothing I could do about it.

Jasmine still is stationed in the house; she is stationed far away from the bed and the other dogs. Whitney is doing fantastic; she's actually healing faster than me.

Have I learned any lessons from this? Of course. Whitney is an old dog and will not be with us much longer. She gave us three beautiful litters and has actually saved my life. She is a trained search and rescue dog and we are dreading the day she leaves us. That will be a sad day.

Jasmine is only 2 ½ years old. She is smart as a whip and she is not de-sexed. We have no intact males living anywhere near us and we live in the mountains of Idaho in a fairly secluded area.

We have to be more aware of our pack dynamics. They are like families. It's like sibling rivalry where two brothers don't get along. The results can be more serious so it is up to us to protect Whitney. We also are now stepping up training with Jasmine. Since I'd been ill for so very long (which led to the surgery) we also think that was part of the problem. Jasmine may have gotten a mixed message from my weakness that there was actually an opening for alpha female and this was her audition for the part. So, we are protecting Whitney, increasing Jasmine's training regiment and me? I'm trying to heal before I lose any more writing assignments.

If you live in a pack or if you have a kennel or if you work with working dogs (protection, police dogs) as I did, you should always be mentally prepared for a bite to happen. I taught Kenpo Karate for many years and the number one thing I learned for women which can really apply in a dog bite situation is this: Just react, step in, and take care of the situation quickly, firmly, and completely. Leave no question in the dogs' minds who is boss. Lick your wounds when everything is over. If you are attacked by another human you cannot waste precious seconds thinking "Why me?" "What did I do to deserve this?" and so on. Those thoughts might go through your head quickly but no matter how fast they travel, those are precious seconds you are losing where your attacker can gain the upper hand. This is how you have to think if you ever have 2 or more dogs wilding out on each other. You cannot waste even one precious second.

Jokes By Death Baby

Jesus Christ the Jewish born Rabbi and Messiah of Christianity and Islam is on his way to save the world. Why would he want to?

What's funnier than a dead baby? A dead baby inside of a Koran.

Yesterday 30 children were playing in a Baghdad playground. They had to pass through one thousand checkpoints to get there. A bomb went off. The babies died.

What is the difference between John McCain and a dead baby?

Meghan McCain.

The United Nations inspectors are visiting the new Iranian nuclear enrichment site under the mountains of Qom today. Iran needed three weeks to install the new playground. How many raioactive dead babies does it take to screw in a lightbulb? Three.

Men are from Mars and women are from Venus. What is the difference between a dead baby and a Mars bar? The prophet Muhammad.

Woody Allen said that politicians were one step below child molesters. Why so generous?

What do Iraqi dead babies think of the surge?

Mission Accomplished. The Green Monster.

What did the dead baby say to the virgin?

Mama.

The surge is working said Comical Ali. God of Mount Sinai aka God the Father, Jesus Christ, The Holy Spirit, Allah, Yehovah, Elohim carved 10 commandments in stone 3,200 years ago and handed them to the 3 billion Jews, Christians and Muslims on Earth today, including "Don't Murder". Then according to every bible scholar and every prophet especially Jesus Christ and God of Mount Sinai in the Bibles repeatedly, in the parts they don't teach you so that you continue to buy their candy, the bible writers spent the next two thousand years adding on their own words in the Old Testament, the New Testament and the Koran, and they signed these 3,000 pages, "God."

It is these forgeries that divide us and have us all on our radioactive knees today. As the bible prophets watched the bible writers take God's name in vain the Prophet Ezekiel said, "God says, 'They say, Says the Lord, when the Lord has not sent them, and yet they wait for the fulfillment of their word." (Ezekiel 13:6).

What did the dead baby say to John McCain?

Our nuclear reactors are for peaceful purposes only. Surge into Iraq. Surge into Afghanistan. Surge into Iran. We have nothing against Muslims.

In the Old Testament, the Holy Scripture and foundation of Judaism, Christianity and Islam the bible forgers wrote, "God said, If you hear it said that scoundrels from amond you led the people astray and said, 'Let us go out and worship other Gods', then put all the inhabitants of his town to the sword, every man, woman and child, utterly destroying it and everyone and everything in it. All of its spoil you shall gather into the public square; then burn the town and everyone and all its spoil with fire as a whole burnt offering to the Lord your God. But first, put javelins through the heads of the babies, that they not descend into the manholes." (Deuteronomy 13:12-18).

Motorcycle Audio Systems are the Perfect Accessories for Bikers

Motorcycle audio systems can be customized to perform different functions. Many brands today offer bikers with helmet headsets, CB communication, or rider-and-passenger intercoms that can also perform different functions. Other than providing entertainment through music, these sound systems can also be integrated with two-way radios for better communication with fellow riders or with passengers.

In the past, audio systems were bulky and had become more of a hassle rather than a convenience for most bike riders. Today, most audio systems for motorcycles feature state-of-the-art design and technology for a powerful, reliable and versatile performance. Some brands even feature helmet-less headsets and Bluetooth technology for wireless communication, which can be very helpful in reducing distractions and allowing riders to keep both hands on their bikes' handles. Others have also integrated mp3 playback or satellite radio into their motorcycle audio systems for on-road entertainment. This can be heard either through speakers that are installed on the motorcycle, or through in-helmet audio, which is a space saver as it doesn't take up space on the vehicle while providing excellent sound.

Additionally, most brands of audio systems today have models that are modular or upgradeable, so that users can grow with the brand and are able to follow its development as technology advances. This option can also be cost-efficient, because bike riders do not have to purchase another full unit, but just have the new equipment integrated with their current motorcycle audio systems as soon as it becomes available.

Resource Box: Located in the mountains of western North Carolina, the owners of Cycle Accessory Store are avid riders, making their store an ideal option for many bike enthusiasts. The company sells only top-of-the-line motorcycle audio and other bike accessories that the owners themselves would choose to use for their own bikes.
